This dish is the perfect combination of sweet and savory, and the best part is that you can add any toppings you like. Plus, it only requires a few simple ingredients, making it a quick and delicious breakfast option. But what I love most about this dish is the memories it brings back of my grandma making it for me as a child. The aroma of cinnamon filling the house, the warm, gooey texture, and the love put into every bite - it's a breakfast that truly warms my heart.
Ingredients:
- 8 brioche buns or 1 loaf of French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 4 eggs
- 4 tbsp butter
Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, beat the eggs with the milk, cinnamon, and brown sugar until well combined.
3. In a separate bowl, add the brioche buns or French bread cubes.
4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes and toss gently until all the bread is coated.
5. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
6. Pour the bread and egg mixture into the greased baking dish, making sure to spread it evenly.
7. Cut the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter into small cubes and sprinkle them over the top of the bread mixture. I also top it with a little cinnamon and brown sugar so it has a textured sugary crust.
8. Cover the baking dish with foil and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if possible. This step will allow the bread to absorb all the flavors of the egg mixture.
9. When ready to bake, remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes.
10. Bake the French toast casserole for 45-50 minutes, or until it is golden brown and fully cooked.
11. Once done, let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
12. Optional: you can serve with toppings such as maple syrup, fresh berries, or whipped cream for an extra dose of sweetness.
